Birmingham street racers given driving bans

Police used covert filming to capture the illegal street racers in action

About 200 motorists have been banned from driving and fined after being caught on CCTV “street racing” in Birmingham, police said.

Officers secretly filmed up to 500 motorists gathering on the A47 nearStarCitybetween May and July.

About 400 drivers were identified from CCTV footage, of which around 200 have been banned and fined.

Police said racers have been making stretches of the A47 “no-go” areas on Sunday nights into the early hours.

TheWest Midlands force said police alongside Birmingham City Council had issued about 120 injunctions against some of the motorists who were banned and fined, prohibiting them from participating in or watching street racing.

Anyone who ignores the terms of their injunction would be banned from driving and risk a fine of up to £5,000, police said.

PC Paul Bieliauskas, who is part of the investigation team, said: “Street racers have been making stretches of the A47  near StarCity, roads in Bordesley Green and the A38 towards Bassetts Pole no-go roads on Sunday nights into the early hours.

“It would only take one accident and we could have multiple injuries and fatalities of both spectators and motorists.”
