TV’s Barbara Knox in Drink-Drive Arrest

Barbara Knox, who plays Rita Tanner in hit soap Coronation Street, has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Ms Knox, 80, was held at a police station in Knutsford, Cheshire last month.

She had arrived at the police station after her daughter, Maxine Ashcroft, 56, was earlier arrested for a similar offence.

Ms Ashcroft has since been charged with “driving when the alcohol level was above the limit”.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “Police stopped a car in Hollow Lane, Knutsford, and a 56-year-old woman from Gloucestershire was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

“An 80-year-old woman from Knutsford arrived at Knutsford police station and was also arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. She was bailed pending further inquiries.”

A Coronation Street spokeswoman said the arrest was a personal matter and they had no comment to make.

It’s expect the actress will film her scenes next week, and a source said: “This won’t get in her way.”
